Math Routines

Here are some things I have made for some of my math routines. I always seem to be looking for copies each September so I thought I would share them with you. I have blogged before about this amazing math book called Number Sense Routines by Jessica Shumway.  It is LOADED with great ideas and excellent explanation of why we should be doing certain math routines with our kids. I find myself turning to this book all the time.

Keeping Track of the Days in School

Counting to 100

In the bigger container, students will put a cube in the bucket to represent each day.  Jessica gives great examples of how students count how many. The smaller jar will be used to collect (small rocks) this shows students what 100 looks like.

Number Cards

I saw something similar to these number cards in a Kathy Richardson book. The number cards go to 10. I like the visual of the dots in groups.

Numbers 1-100 for the Hundredth Chart

I could not find missing numbers on the 100th chart and finally decided to make a set for the pocket chart.

How Many Days With Ten Frames

I learned this routine from Mathematics In The City.
I just have the kids stick a circle dot sticker on the ten-frame ( I use the same color dots) once the frame is filled it moves to the tens. My school used to use straws but from our training we learned that Ten Frames are a better visual for kindergarteners and first graders.

Happy Counting!

  1. I love the Number Sense book as well. I am adding some new routines to my math block this year.
