How I have grown as a writer!

We brainstormed during large group times things we used to do and what we do now at writing workshop time.   We went in our writing workshop folders and selected a story from September or October. 

I know this is a difficult task for students, but my goal for this lesson is to get students to be reflective about their work and to realize how much we have been learning about writing.

 Over the next few weeks, I will be having students reflect on for their portfolio. 

I have an easier sheet below that ask students to circle how they did.  Ideally, I wish I did this every month and hope to do this next year.

Class Chart

 Organizing Stories Each Month

  I used to take all of their stories and put a cover on them and bind them together into a big book. It would be crazy trying to figure out the order in which they wrote them. 

I do encourage students to date stamp, and we have a date stamp person, but books still don't always have dates. 

I like to put writing workshop stories together. 

I staple a color cover and put 5/6 pages inside.

My students can add papers or take papers out. This year, I made all the September and October stories with a purple cover.  

Each month I change the color of the cover. It had helped me so much in keeping track of when they wrote

them. 

When we look at our work, I can say, pick a story with a purple cover.

Publishing Books

I have parents publish stories. In November, we have an Author's Share each child gets up and reads a story to the group. It's a large group, but the kids do great! Some years I publish lots of books some years I don't.   It depends on the group of kids. The student fill in the sheet below.
