Transitional Words

I went to a workshop a few summers ago, and the presenter shared the idea of putting transitional words into the daily schedule.

When I was teaching kindergarten, I would often add these words to my daily schedule around winter time. I think if you teach first grade or second you could add them now.

Isn't this a great way to introduce some of those transition words we use for writing?

I included the daily schedule icons too!

  1. Hi Melissa!
I'm so glad you are back to blogging again. I have been checking on you every week. Thank you so much for sharing your daily schedule and templates. I have to tell you I attended the Teachers College this summer after your rave reviews. It has been a life changer for me in my classroom, although I'm learning as I go and it's definitely stretching me I am so so glad I went. Thank you so much for tuning me into it. I was wondering if you would be willing to share what you are doing for emergent reading books. So far I have read Carrot Seed, Three Billy Goats Gruff, Caps for Sale and Corduroy to my students. Have you considered going to one of the mini workshops in NYC? I would so love to meet up with teachers who have been trying it "In real life" and just get some encouragement. Thank you and I'm so glad you are back!

  2. Hi Melissa,
I just went to the Teacher College reunion last week. It was AMAZING!! I live in Massachusetts and Lucy Calkins presented on the Reading Units of Study and the Writing Units of Study. I hope some day to go to the summer institute too!
My role has changed this year. I am no longer teaching kindergarten, I am literacy specialist in a K-5 building.

I have been working in kindergarten and first-grade classrooms on shared reading and interactive writing which I plan to blog about soon. I am going to be working with a classroom that is piloting the reading units so I will tell you what I think!!! Are you using the new units in writing and reading? What do you think?
