Reading in KC

Before I kicked off the Three Ways to Read A Book I, read the  books Where The Wild Things Are, The Gingerbread Man Lost At School and The Gingerbread Man. I modeled telling the story using the pictures. Next week my anchor texts will continue to be familiar books The Three Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, etc.

Every child has a book bucket. I put level A books in their buckets. Each child has a few one worded alphabet books

We practiced Read To Self for a short period.

April's blog Chalk Talk has a great book suggestion for building stamina that I plan to read on Monday!

I recently purchased the book Smarter Charts in K-2 by Marjorie Martinelli and Kristine Mraz. I strongly recommend this book if you make a lot of anchor charts. It is full of great ideas.

Over the summer, I made a basket full of story strings. On the wall in my meeting area, I made the story ingredients larger on the wall.

A story string consists of icons glued onto a string to represent the elements of a story.

I got the idea for these story strings from the book The Complete Year In Reading and Writing by Karen McNally and Pam Allyn. This book has great units of study to kick off reading. I am using many of them!

I bought little wooden shapes and painted and spray painted pieces. The top of the string is just the metal rings you can buy at Staples.
