Nonfiction Personal Narratives

It's an exciting time during writing time. The students are so busy writing and doing it independently! The writing is getting easier to read, and spacing appears almost everywhere. We moved from writing personal narratives to writing nonfiction personal narratives. 

What's the difference?

A nonfiction personal narrative is a true story about someone or something. In order to write a nonfiction personal narrative we needed to gather information. Our first writing project was to interview the PE teacher in our building. Check out our questions below!  My students LOVE the PE teacher so I think they really wanted to find out as much information about her as possible. The goal was to ask a question that would help us write about her day. 

After the class interview with  the PE teacher, the students wrote books about A Life In The Day of Ms. Fyve. 

We also wrote A Day in the Life of Mrs. Clancy. We plan to share this book with the kindergartner's next year. You can check out our group write below.  

Next steps 

Students are interviewing a classmates and writing A Day in The Life book about that friend. I hope to share them by the end of the week!

Quick Reflection: I did have students pick topics on their own, and it was difficult. Students wanted to write personal narratives about themselves! I found that the students who picked someone else in the class to write about automatically started to ask them questions like we did with the PE teacher. I decided to shift gears and assign a friend to each person to write about. That way, everyone will have a book written about them!
