Bumper Stickers for Books

thinking about books

This bulletin board was in a spot close to the reading rug. Students would refer to it often during talk time.  We realized pretty quickly that books could fall into more than one category. What I liked about this ritual is that it reinforced the idea that author's write stories for a purpose.

Joyfully yours in reading and talking about books in the new year,

Melissa

During read aloud time with accountable talk, we thought about the BIG message of the book.

Why did the author write this story?
What does it mean to you?
What do you wonder about?

Lester Laminack refers to this big message as a bumper sticker for the book. Below are some of the messages we learned from books.

Never Give Up
Be Brave
Courage
Persistent
Friendship
Be Who You Are
Be Resilient
Family is important
You learn from mistakes
